The shape of things to come

Humpback Whales. Golf Balls. Power Tools. It's new ways of thinking and radical design that fuel Zipp 858 NSW, the next evolution in wheels.

The Highest Level of Innovation

'The Nest' is a high-security, technologically advanced R&D lab at Zipp's Indianapolis headquarters. The lab is responsible for innovating Zipp's most advanced technologies, which they label, 'Nest Speed Weaponry'.

Zipp NSW has the brightest minds, most capable hands and technologically advanced materials coming together on a mission to engineer the fastest, most stable and highest performance cycling components ever built.

Design inspired by nature

Biomimicry is the imitation of nature for solving complex human problems. Zipp engineers used these principles to see how nature solves problems of speed, control, and efficiency in developing their next generation of Zipp wheels.

The irregular shape of the humpback whale's pectoral fins help provide a giant creature with speed and manoeuvrability deep within the density of the ocean - maybe it could help a cyclist moving quickly through the air? Zipp engineers developed and tested similar shapes along the inner surface of the rim. After years of research and hundreds of hours in the wind tunnel, the resulting 'Sawtooth' design delivers aerodynamics and crosswind stability that far surpasses any previous benchmarks.

More aerodynamic

The dimpled texture of a golf ball acts to control turbulence around the ball, allowing it to move through the air more fluently, and travel twice as far as a smooth ball. 858 NSW rim surfaces feature a specifically designed pattern of hexagonal dimples which reduce turbulence around the surface of the rim, therefore reducing drag. The result is a laterally stiffer, lighter, more nimble wheel that accelerates faster and handles better in any conditions.

Stability at high speed

When riding, air flows around the rim in different directions, forming vortexes. Vortexes build up until eventually being shed by the wheel in an effect called ‘buffeting’. You notice buffeting when you open a car window, driving at high speed. Buffeting applies tiny lateral forces on the wheel, making it less stable. The 'Sawtooth' design sheds vortexes in smaller, high frequency forces, resulting in an unrivalled feeling of high speed stability.

One wheelset. All conditions.

By delivering on both aerodynamics and stability, Zipp 858 NSW ushers in a new era where deep-section wheels are no longer reserved only for 'ideal' race conditions. Light and responsive like a lower profile rim, the focus on providing stability leaves the rider relaxed and comfortable, even in crosswinds.

By minimizing concerns over control, riders can also remain in their aero position longer, saving energy and using it to ride faster and further instead. The wheels perform equally well climbing and descending, making them the ultimate choice for any type of competition, from traditional road racing to time trial and triathlon.

Keep rolling

Every time a conventional hub starts to coast, friction within the ratchet acts to slow the rider down and lose efficiency. Zipp's 'Cognition hub' uses magnets to disengage the ratchet in coasting when it's not required, and re-engage when pedalling. This reduces drag for noticeably improved free speed, particularly downhill. Pedal less, coast faster, and maintain speed through corners.

True Showstopper

Zipp 858 NSW wheels are available in both rim and disc brake versions. Rim brake versions feature Zipp's Showstopper brake track technology, a one-directional texture of molded-in silicon carbide particles suspended in the braking surface. Silicon carbide is commonly used in cutting and grinding tools, as it is 3x harder than steel and has high resistance to abrasion. This makes it the perfect material to increase the roughness of the braking track, providing the rider with more consistent and responsive braking in any conditions.

The surface is specifically tuned for the Zipp Tangente Platinum Pro EVO Brake Pads. These are designed to move water and debris away from the surface, acting to clean and dry on the go, and further improve braking effectiveness.

Weaponry years in the making

It takes 12.5 hours to produce each Indianapolis-made Zipp 858 NSW rim in a blend of old-fashioned hand craftsmanship and technologically advanced manufacturing. Rims are hand-laced to Zipp's Portuguese-made Cognition hubs using Belgian-made spokes. Stealth aesthetics with discrete Zipp branding are applied to complete a look of true 'Speed Weaponry'. All of these however, are just final touches on years of research and hundreds of hours of testing in the lab, the wind tunnel and out on the open road.
