Wheels are one of the most important components of your bike, and upgrading wheels can make a significant difference to performance and ride quality. Wheels need to be strong for durability and stiffness, lightweight, roll smoothly on quality hubs, and have a reliable surface for braking.

Typically, road wheels can be divided into climbing wheels, mid-section aerodynamic wheels, deep section aerodynamic wheels, training wheels, and adventure wheels. Climbing wheels are typically lighter, with shallow rims. Mid-section aerodynamic wheels have a rim depth of around 30mm - 50mm, providing improved speed and aerodynamics. Deep section rims are upwards of 50mm in depth, and are popular in triathlon, time trial and sprint courses. As rims get deeper, they typically become heavier, less compliant and more challenging to ride in cross winds, and as such are more favored for shorter events.

Mountain bike wheels are available in 26”, 27.5” (650B) and 29” sizes. The major consideration with mountain bike wheels is weight and strength, and you may need to choose what is most important depending on your riding style, and kinds of trails you typically cover.

Carbon wheels are typically lighter, stiffer and have a smoother ride feel than alloy wheels.

Clincher tires are a traditional combination of tubes and tires, compared to tubular tires, which are glued directly to specific rims. Tubular tires can run at a higher pressure, typically meaning less flats and faster rolling.
