BMC FourStroke FS01 29 XTR Bike
When the course is particularly rough, the BMC racing team pulls for the Fourstroke FS01 XTR. This is a cross-country full-suspension 29er race rig that, owing to two BMC concepts, APS, and BWC, is still more than ready to take on any manner of trail riding you can imagine.

BWC, Big Wheel Concept, is the first point of thinking. This is BMC re-thinking geometry to maximize the benefits of 29ers while minimizing any negatives. The result is an agile climber that is as comfortable picking lines while crawling uphill as it is ripping up an open descent. The keys are lower bottom bracket, longer top tube, shorter head tube, and more relaxed head angle. APS, Advanced Pivot System, is how they isolate the pedaling inputs from the trail-created inputs. The suspension is active whether you're pedaling or coasting. And to tune it perfectly, you just sit on the bike and look down at the swingarm to find the Initial Load Indicator. Machined and painted lines on the arm that allow you to figure out where neutral is, and then tune for firm or soft.

This is a team bike, so it's set up for World Cup racing. So, yes, the frame is light, 2040g for a Medium, but it is also outfitted with a full complement of top-shelf racing components. The bulk of the build is Shimano XTR, with a 36/26 double ring crank in front, eleven-speed 11-40 cassette cogset in back, low-profile XTR Shadow Plus rear derailleur, XTR front, and XTR Rapidfire shifters bolted right next to the hydraulic XTR Race brake levers which run to XTR XC Race calipers.

The wheels come equipped with 180mm rotors front and rear attached via Centerlock. The wheels themselves are a unique spec: DT Swiss hub laced via DT Swiss spokes to BMC carbon-fiber rims. BMC wanted a wheel that could match the frame and the ride, so they designed their own carbon rims, the MWX01, and then laced them up to the most durable hubs on the market, and a ratchet system that has almost instantaneous engangement. Tires are the Continental X-King in the front, a fast-rolling dirt-shedding tire, with the hardpack-favoring Race King in the rear. These are tubed, but the rims are tubeless ready when you want to go there.

Suspension is controlled by Fox. Specifically their Float CTD suspension. The fork has 32mm Kashima-coated slippery stanchions, 100mm of travel, and the knob-adjust Climb Trail Descend damper. The damper allows you to easily tune the fork without giving it more thought than whether or not you want more or less sensitivity. A 15mm thru-axle helps stiffen up the unit and improve tracking. The same kind of CTD damper is used for the 100mm travel rear shock.

The bars and stem are from BMC, a carbon flat bar fixed to an aluminum stem. The post is a BMC carbon-fiber two-bolt post that once snugged will never slip. It grasps the superlight Fizik Tundra M3 braided carbon-fiber railed saddle.

A World Cup ready race bike that is equally at home on the trail; that's the BMC Fourstroke FS01 XTR.
