Garmin Edge 1030 Cycling Computer

Get your $50 Garmin mail in rebate
Download the form here

The Garmin Edge 1030 is the successor to the popular Edge 1000. It not only boasts of improved battery life, but it also maps better, routes better, integrates with Strava better, and even makes communicating on the road easier. This is the all-feature computer that can do the all the simple, intermediate, and expert stuff without breaking a sweat, whether you’re a metric-obsessed training fiend or a rider who just likes to record for later uploads, but it can also be a full-on adventure buddy and advisor, allowing you to find better roads, go farther, and remain in touch while still way off the beaten path.

First, a bit about the unit itself. It has a full-color 3.5” screen, an is in a case that is 4.5” long by 2.3” wide by .8” deep (11.4 x 5.8 x 1.9cm). It weighs 4.3 ounces (123g). The battery will last up to 20 hours on a charge and can be extended by days if you attach the accessory external battery pack. This pack is a pretty cool add-on, as it sits underneath the out-front mount. It has, both GPS and GLONASS systems for dialing in location. It can be sync’ed with Garmin or third-party speed, cadence, heart rate, power sensors thanks to ANT+ reception, as well as Garmin’s Varia radar system. There are tactile buttons for powering on/off as well as laps and start/stop, and there’s a sensitive touch screen for the rest, which can work with gloves on.

As with all Garmins, it can be programmed to feature multiple screens showing not only what you’re doing, but where you’re going, and real-time data analysis of how you’re doing. As with other Garmins that sync with your smart phone, you can get notifications from your phone, send notifications to your phone and to the world, as well as LiveTrack and GroupTrack to see where your friends and competitors are. There’s even incident detection, a feature by which your Garmin can tell you’ve been in a crash and send a notification to your phone, which sends that info where you want.

Where the unit is new and incredible is several new features. One is Trendline Popularity Routing, by which Garmin Connect has analyzed both where you’re going and all their own ride data to provide you with the most popular routes. Think of this as Garmin digesting all the rides it has on file and mapping a route for you. You can also send messages from your 1030 to the Garmin Edge’s of your friends. Their Strava Live Segments has been updates so you cannot only see your effort analyzed on the ride, but you can also be tipped off to nearby Strava segments as you ride. They’ve also teamed up with TrainingPeaks so you can have your coach upload the workouts to the TrainingPeaks Connect IQ app and you can then have them pushed to your Garmin.

There are two versions of the Edge 1030 available. You can get the Edge 1030 on its own, which includes: the unit, extended out-front mount that has the unit sitting flush with your handlebars, tether, USB cable, and manuals. There is also the Bundle, which includes: unit, extended out-front mount that has the unit sitting flush with your handlebars, tether, USB cable, and manuals, plus speed sensor, cadence sensor, and premium heart rate transmitter and strap. The former is for people who have everything else but the head unit, the latter is for people who need everything.

The Garmin Edge 1030 brings not only all the metrics you can think of, but the hive mind to your bike rides. It does thinking for you so you can use your brain to enjoy the ride.
