2018 BMC Agonist 01 ONE Bike
If you suffer for your sport, because the agony is the same as the ecstasy, the BMC Agonist 01 is your bike. The BMC Agonist 01 is a cross-country bike for those who are focused less on the race and more on the ride. They started with their highly-successful, World Cup-proven Four-Stroke, and tweaked the design to add travel and stability. This design change allows it to still have that cross-country ride while adding more forgiveness for going more extreme.

The way they get to the Agonist from the Four-Stroke is by first, dropping the head angle back by a half a degree, to 69.5-degrees from 70. Then they steepened the seat angle by a quarter-degree, to 73.75-degrees from 73.5. They also added 10mm more stack, while providing more stand over height, so you can be both shorter-legged and ride with your stem higher. Trail has been increased to 85mm, from the 80mm of the Four-Stroke. Chainstay length remains 445mm.

They also decided to tweak the rear end. To keep the tight feeling and lateral stiffness of the travel in back, they worked with their Advanced Pivot System (APS) rocker, and leverage ratio, to provide a ratio 2:1, which results in more control of the action in trail mode and a more firmer lockout. The shock has also been turned upside down, so the adjust lever can run cleanly through the frame.

BMC built the frame around these concepts, and the needs of the rider. As they always do, they run countless frame simulations via computer modeling to figure out how to both shape the tubes and place the carbon-fiber plies in both the carbon-fiber main frame and rear triangle, all while keeping weight at a minimum. The Medium frame weighs 2180g with hardware and shock. With the exception of the opening for a round 31.6mm seatpost and the openings for the BB92 bottom bracket shell, there isn’t a round tube on the bike. Even the head tube, though it has round openings, is tapered for a 1 1/8” to 1 ½” steerer. Everything has been shaped to limit any torsional flex and, when possible add some vertical compliance.

They’ve also adopted the Boost standard for this frame. The frame comes with their X-12 Boost axle, which is 148x12mm. They recommend Boost-spaced forks, and the complete bikes come with them. The brake attachment method on the frame is post mounts, and is set for 140mm rotors, but can do other sizes with adapters. Complete bikes come with 160mm rotors.

As is their way with cross-country offerings, all frame sizes fit 29er wheels. BMC mastered mixing big wheels, which roll better, with riding agility, a feat not all bikes accomplish. They did it via their Big Wheel Concept (BWC). The keys are short chainstays, though big enough for 58mm tires, a low bottom bracket, long top tube, and short stem.

As is their style, BMC likes their bikes to look and run clean. This is why they route all the cables internally and even provide channels for each cable, so the threading thereof is easy. The only limitation is that you can either run a cable for a dropper post or for a side swing, direct-mount front derailleur, not both. With the popularity and versatility of 1x systems, which BMC prefers for the Agonist, this might not be a hard choice for many. They also designed and installed a mud flap over the lower linkage to keep it running smooth. And the bottom of the downtube has a molded rubber bumper covering it for both aesthetic and practical protection. The rear derailleur hanger is replaceable and works either with standard or direct mount rear derailleur hangers.

The BMC Agonist 01 is for people who live for getting the most out of long, hard rides.
