Giro Empire SLX Cycling Shoes
Giro brought lace-up cycling shoes back and made them not only cool, but in fact cutting edge with the Giro Empire ACC model. When top-notch pros like Taylor Phinney and Bradley Wiggins select the Giro models with laces and sing their praises, people take notice. Now with the Empire SLX shoes, Giro raises the bar again. Or, more accurately, they drop the weight. The Empire SLX shoes tip the scales at just 175 grams for a size 42.5.

The Empire SLX features all of the technology of the Empire ACC, but makes it lighter. Giro constructs the one-piece upper from premium Evofiber SL, which is lighter and more breathable than the standard Evofiber, and it has more perforations as well. The upper remains comfortable and durable, and is easy to wipe clean post-ride.

The Empire SLX's outsole is Easton EC90 SLX2 high-modulus carbon to provide the top-notch stiffness of the Empire shoes in an even lighter setup. And the resulting stack height is just 6.5 millimeters, meaning that you're even closer to the pedals and more efficient at transferring power and cutting through the wind than with just about any other manufacturer's shoes.

The Empire SLX shoes come with titanium cleat mounting hardware, trimming off even more grams, and the heel pads are replaceable, should they wear out. Even though they're super lightweight, these shoes are designed to last.

Giro has garnered a great deal of attention for the company's modular, high-quality foot beds. The Ultralight SuperNatural Fit Kit insoles come with a variety of arch support inserts to customize the fit perfectly for your foot. The interior of the shoe also features Giro's X-Static fiber, which has antimicrobial silver in it, to keep the Empire SLX shoes cooler and without bacteria, mold, or funky stink. An antimicrobial-fiber carrying bag is included as well.

Note that although many of Giro's road and mountain bike shoe models also come in an HV (high volume) option for those with particularly high arches or wide feet, or to accommodate larger custom orthotics, the laced upper design of the Empire shoes offer enough fit flexibility that an additional model isn't required.

An elastic loop built into the tongue of the shoe keeps the laces tucked safely out of the way, lest you're having flashbacks of laces wrapped around your pedals from your youth. And it turns out shoes with laces are quite aerodynamic when compared to ratchets and straps that stick out from a shoe's upper.

You may be surprised that laces are cutting edge in cycling shoes once again. But you'll be convinced as soon as you step into the Giro Empire SLX shoes. Take them for a spin, and you'll be a convert.
